About Bread Ahead
Bread Ahead is a British artisan bakery and baking school founded by Matthew Jones at London’s Borough Market in 2013. Known for its artisan breads, pastries, doughnuts and baking workshops, the brand has grown across London and expanded internationally through master franchise partnerships. Its overseas development began in Saudi Arabia in 2022, followed by growth across the Middle East and into Asian markets, including Thailand and the Philippines. The franchise model combines a central production bakery with satellite retail outlets to support consistent quality and efficient expansion. Formats range from compact takeaway bakeries to larger venues incorporating seating, production facilities and baking schools. Property requirements
Bread Ahead offers bakery formats ranging from 500 sq ft takeaway outlets to destination venues of approximately 15,000 sq ft. Franchise partners must establish a central production bakery supporting satellite retail sites. Production facilities need space for baking equipment, preparation, storage, refrigeration and distribution. Larger venues may include seating and baking schools. High-footfall sites are preferred, with all premises and formats subject to Bread Ahead approval.
Training and support
Bread Ahead’s franchise model centres on a production bakery supplying multiple satellite outlets. Partners must build skilled baking teams, establish efficient production and distribution processes, and maintain consistent artisan product standards. The brand’s baking schools and Bread Ahead Academy reflect its focus on professional skills development. Specific franchise induction, opening assistance, marketing and ongoing support arrangements should be confirmed directly with Bread Ahead.
Operational requirements
Bread Ahead partners must operate a central production bakery and satellite outlets, with at least two satellites required in the UK and four internationally. Responsibilities include baking, sourcing, stock control, distribution, staffing and retail management. Operators must maintain food safety, product freshness, cost controls and brand standards. Where baking schools are included, partners must also manage teaching activities and suitable instructors.
Experience required
Bread Ahead seeks food and beverage operators with approximately five to ten years’ industry experience, preferably including franchising and multi-site management. Applicants need strong local market knowledge, a proven business record and the capacity to open at least five stores within five years. A minimum of £500,000 in liquid assets is required, alongside access to further finance. Experience in bakery production, staffing, retail and supply chains is advantageous.
