Jaqks
Birmingham chicken and chip shop founded 2014 by Faheem Badur, now four Midlands sites. The third, in Acocks Green, is a 40-foot shipping container converted into a mini diner with four tables, chosen because containers cost far less than bricks and mortar. Franchise fee £25,000.
About Jaqks
Founded by Faheem Badur in 2014, Birmingham-based chicken and chip shop Jaqks has since expanded to four sites, all in the Midlands. His third site, in the Acocks Green area of Birmingham, is a 40 foot-long former shipping container, which was converted into a mini diner, featuring just four tables. “We realised that the cost of a container in comparison to bricks and mortar sites was considerably cheaper and easier to implement as we can standardise all of our processes and procedures,” Badur said. “It is also a much easier way to design a food business layout as all the containers are standard sizes. We can replicate them very easily and keep the quality of the food we serve to an exceptional level.” Badur, who started franchising in 2017, added that shipping containers could easily go on to sites such as pub car parks or festival sites where food licences are already in place.
Why franchise with Jaqks
- There are currently opportunities for expansion as either an area master franchise developer and a single unit franchise owner. An area master franchise developer works exclusively within a specific territory to develop a minimum of ten stores and has the ability to sub franchise. They support the sub franchise owners and deal with franchise queries in the defined area. They pays a territory fee for exclusivity within the defined area (fee dependent on territory) and shares revenues with Jaqks from sub franchising. A single unit franchise owner has exclusive rights to a particular location and pays a franchise fee of £25,000 for the use of the logo, trademarks, branding and business knowhow. They keep 100% of the profits generated from the outlet but pay a set fee of £1,000 per month for royalties, marketing, operations, stock procurement and business development advice. The initial investment will cover the shop fitting, equipment hiring and franchise fee, and no previous catering or retailing experience in necessary. Franchisees will receive three weeks’ initial training, including practical work at a company-owned store, and further training courses are offered to franchisees and their team members on an ongoing basis. A franchise consultant will be assigned to assist with recruiting and training new staff, marketing, products control, pricing and other operational areas, and a development consultant gives support for five weeks during launch. The operation team will also give ongoing support. The initial agreement is for ten years, subject to lease and other considerations, and is renewable at no additional cost. Jaqks has a list of available sites that do not yet have franchisees assigned to them. Normally, a new franchisee will not be permitted to open a second store until six months after opening the first. The brand has also developed a playing card concept with unique characters whose story revolves around starting a revolution in fast food industry, and collecting these cards forms part of its rewards scheme. The company said: “With our vision set clearly on business expansion, we strive to increase our presence and continue building the strong brand you want to be associated with. We will continue to build opportunities in the growing halal and mainstream market, in the UK and the rest of the world. A dedicated business development team constantly tracks and studies lucrative markets in order to expand and strengthen our business, and plans the scope for the growth of the business from a franchise point of view.”
