About Harry Ramsden’s

Harry Ramsden’s began in Guiseley, West Yorkshire, in 1928, when founder Harry Ramsden opened a small wooden hut serving traditional fish and chips. The business grew into one of Britain’s best-known restaurant brands, expanding nationally and internationally through company-owned restaurants, franchising and licensing. Its menu centres on freshly prepared fish, chips and traditional British accompaniments.

Since its acquisition by Deep Blue Restaurants in 2019, the brand has undergone renewed investment and development. Deep Blue rebranded as Harry Ramsden’s Group in November 2025, reflecting a strategy focused on expanding the heritage brand. Recent openings include Notting Hill, Baldock motorway services, Staxton in Yorkshire and compact Harry’s Hut locations. International expansion has also resumed in Romania. The business now offers restaurant, takeaway, kiosk and licensed foodservice formats, supported by training, operational guidance and brand development.

Property requirements

Harry Ramsden’s offers four formats for different property types. Full-service restaurants typically require 1,800-4,000+ sq ft, while fast-casual venues need approximately 1,300-3,000 sq ft. Quick-service outlets suit units of 700-1,200 sq ft, and Harry’s Hut uses a compact 20ft container format. Suitable locations include coastal destinations, high streets, motorway services, shopping centres and travel hubs. All premises require appropriate food preparation, extraction, storage and customer facilities.

Training and support

Harry Ramsden’s provides franchise partners with initial training, operational guidance and assistance before and after opening. Its published franchise information describes two weeks of training at a UK centre of excellence, followed by additional on-site support around launch. The Proudly Serving model includes product training, branded packaging and operational oversight. Partners can also access established recipes, quality standards and marketing resources. The precise support package depends on the selected format and agreement.

Operational requirements

Franchisees manage food preparation, staffing, customer service, hygiene, stock control and financial performance. Operators must follow approved recipes and quality standards for fish, chips and accompanying products. Full-service restaurants require dining room management, while quick-service outlets focus on efficient takeaway and delivery operations. Compact kiosks need careful stock planning and high-volume service capability. All partners must maintain allergen controls, equipment, food safety standards and consistent branding.

Experience required

Harry Ramsden’s is primarily seeking ambitious franchise partners with the financial resources and operational capability to develop multiple locations. Suitable applicants should understand their local markets, identify strong trading sites and demonstrate experience managing successful teams. Previous hospitality, retail or multi-site business experience is advantageous. Partners must be committed to maintaining food quality, service standards and the brand’s heritage. Individual applications may be considered according to the proposed format and development plan.
